Sirens were creatures in Greek mythology of half bird (terracotta bird) and half woman who lured sailors to destruction by the charm of their song. The number of Sirens is not very clear, however, according to Homer there were two Sirens and others say that they were three or five.

They were given wings from Demetre in order to find Persephone, their master, who had been kidnapped by Hades. Demetres ordered Persephone’s handmaidens to quickly find them and rescue her by flying and singing their song, that is why he gave them wings. Unfortunately, the handmaidens could not find her anywhere and Demetres anger condemned them to live forever as Sirens, far away singing their song, a song with the power to put body and soul into a state of fatal lethargy. These beautiful and dangerous creatures, with their sweet song, impossible to resist, once heard, lured sailors to the rocky shores where they were instantly shipwrecked.
